Since trading is done through trade routes in BNW you don't loose that "diplomatic" gold like you did in G&K. The main downfall of diplomacy hits in G&K was not being able to sell your luxuries for 240g. While the diplomatic hits are tougher in BNW, I don't feel it's worse than G&K.
